BT Communicator, BT's VoIP service, has been replaced by Softphone. This free software makes it easy to turn your laptop into a phone1.
You can use Softphone to make and receive free voice calls over broadband to other Softphone users2! Simply download the free software, ensure your laptop has a suitable sound card (this may already be built-in), then plug in a microphone and speakers, headset or handset.
Softphone can be used with your broadband connection at home, or out and about at a BT Openzone hotspot, right after you've logged in.
If you choose to open a Pay-As-You-Go account, Softphone also gives you great-value rates on calls to landlines and mobiles in the UK and abroad. Moreover, by signing up for BT Broadband Talk, you'll benefit from free evening and weekend calls to UK3 landlines.
Softphone features Hi-definition Sound (Hi-dS), so you can enjoy clear, high quality voice calls over your broadband connection.
1 Terms and conditions apply.
2 The recipient must also have Softphone and have been dialled by their Softphone IM name, not number.
