Westminster in Wi-Fi first

Westminster's library users will benefit from the latest wireless technology after the city council became the first in the country to provide Wi-Fi access in all its libraries.

BT has installed BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots in all of the council's 13 library buildings, as well as its archive centre. The move will give library users and council workers even more flexible access to information on the internet, email and other e-government services.

The new Wi-Fi service is part of the council's ongoing Wireless City project, which also includes use of wireless technology for to assist in crime and congestion reduction through CCTV, pollution and noise monitoring and remote working for council staff.

Wi-Fi will enable students to access the internet in Westminster's libraries using their own computers and laptops, making research for assignments and coursework simpler. Visitors can use the technology to find out up-to-the-minute local information and business users can use it to work in a pleasant and peaceful environment.

Cllr Sarah Richardson, Cabinet Member of Lifelong Learning said: "BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots in our libraries are a fast and simple way to ensure that people gain flexible access to data at broadband speeds whenever they need it. It will ensure that all users will be able to take advantage of the most useful and advanced technology that the world has to offer in a safe and pleasant environment. It's a great step forward and we're very proud to be the first council to do this."
